The Acai berry grows on a tall palm tree in the Amazon floodplains. Until about 5 years ago Acai berries were unavailable in the US and relatively unknown outside of Brazil. Because of the lack of knowledge about Acai berries, their health benefits remained unstudied until recently.

Acai berries are a perishable fruit and are traditionally eaten immediately after picking and are used by natives in the Amazon for immune system defense and improved digestion. Because of these factors we remain uncertain about all the health benefits of Acai.  Researchers at the University of Florida have completed an Acai berry cancer study that shows one of the powerful health benefits of Acai fighting cancer.

Just like a glass of red wine or other fruits like blueberries Acai has high concentrations of Antioxidants. Unlike the other options Acai has a much higher concentration of those nutrients. In an Acai research study conducted by Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor at UF, a team of researchers studied how Acai berries effected human cells infected with Leukemia.

The Acai cancer study used cells removed from a human body who were then saturated with different amounts of Acai berries. In the study, the researchers checked to see how much caspase-3 was released after Acai was added to the cancerous cells. Capase-3 is an enzyme released by cancerous cells when they are destroyed. They found that the addition of Acai caused 25 to 84 percent of the cancerous cells to have a fatal response.


While the relationship between antioxidants in Acai berry and preventing cancer still remains uncertain, researchers are encouraged. In the lab at least the Antioxidants in Acai lead to reduced cancer cells and risk of cancer in the body. Compounds like Acai that help fight cancer in a petri dish may do the same when ingested into our bodies. There are a lot of factors to consider however, like what percentage of the antioxidants in Acai are actually absorbed into the body.  Or how fast our metabolism uses up the antioxidants in the Acai berry. What is known is that Acai berry is a healthy nutrient supplement that may reduce your cancer risk, in the same way that a glass of red wine would, only in higher concentration.

We are just beginning to understand the many health benefits of Acai berries. Whether or not they actually help fight cancer in the human body remains unknown, just like whether or not a glass of red wine may do the same. However, increasing your daily intake of antioxidants is associated with reduced risk for many diseases like cancer and heart disease. More Acai berry cancer studies are necessary to completely understand how Acai effects cancerous cells but the initial results are promising.
